One of the events that is most looked forward to in Hong Kong is the New Year Fireworks and Countdown celebration. Are you ready to welcome 2020 in style and ring it in with a bang? If yes, then keep reading. We have come up with a list of seven of the best places to celebrate new year in Hong Kong with fireworks.

Countdown Celebration Centers

The scope, sophistication, and complexity of the performances vary exponentially with different types of displays featuring fireworks, shooting stars, lasers, LED lights, and stunning choreography.

You can practically watch the fireworks from anywhere you are. The countdown starts 60 seconds before midnight and goes on for about 10 minutes. The list includes the best places to watch the fireworks in Hong Kong for free; in the public viewing area.

• Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade

Here visitors enjoy spectacular views starting at the Clock Tower to Hung Hom. The Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade is located in the West Kowloon Cultural District and had been closed for 4 years for renovation purposes.

The Avenue of Stars which is Hong Kong’s own version of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame has the best front row seats to the pyrotechnic displays of new year fireworks. The place has an amazing atmosphere and gets a bit crowded so it’s advisable to arrive early.

If huge crowds are overwhelming for you, book a harbour cruise and enjoy the show from the water. From 11 pm there is a show of “shooting stars” at intervals of every 15 minutes.

• Ocean Terminal Deck

Ocean Terminal Deck is located in Harbour City, 3-27 Canton Road. This deck gives 270° views across Victoria Harbour. On top of that, there are also many restaurants and public viewing platforms that offer panoramic views of the harbour.

Restaurants at the deck offer al fresco dining and a globe-spanning range of cuisines and vistas that are to die for. At the rooftop, there’s an observatory deck while on the ground floor there’s a huge lawn from where the views are also great.

You should book early if you want to reserve space at one of the restaurants here if you want to go early for public viewing. 

• Sky Corridor of Hong Kong West Kowloon Station

The Sky Corridor is yet another option for someone who wants amazing views of the New Year’s celebration fireworks. The venue is at the recently opened West Kowloon Station and features an observation deck that gives great views of the harbour.

If you like, you can combine the fireworks viewing with a family trip to the mainland on the new High-Speed Rail. The place gets very busy so you should arrive early.

• Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai

The Golden Bauhinia Square is located in from of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center which makes it a focal point to view the display of fireworks. To go there, take the exit A5 from Wan Chai MTR and walk along the footbridge of O’Brien Road. Alternatively, you can take the ferry and walk from the Star Ferry Wan Chai Pier – it should be a 10 minutes walk.

This venue is usually less crowded but gives the advantage of amazing views of the pyrotechnics thanks to its proximity to the water.

• Tamar Park in Admiralty

Tamar Park is another great spot for you to see all the action. The fireworks go on for about 23 minutes and are quite spectacular. The park is located next to the Central Government Offices and the Legislative Council Complex.

The park is a simple walk from Admiralty MTR Station. There’s a grassy lawn that makes the perfect spot for a picnic. All you need to do is arrive early and bring your own food and drinks.

• Sky100 Observation Deck

To get into Sky100, one needs to purchase tickets that go for HK$568 and are on sale starting December 1^st to December 28^th at noon. Admission is from 31^st December from 8:30 pm to 11:45 pm. Guests leave on 1^st January at 1 am.

• Victoria Peak

The peak is the highest point from where you can watch the show and experience a true bird’s eye view of the fireworks. You can get to the peak through the Peak Tram as it passes the city’s buildings at an almost impossible gradient.

If you want to get the best viewpoint at the summit, head to the viewing platform at the Peak Tower. If you have more time, you can hike around the 3.5km Peak Circle Walk. This is a great tourist spot to ring in the New Year in Hong Kong.
